Creating a Resume and Cover Letter with Guidelines (Click Here)

RESUME

Getting started. . . When making your resume it's always beneficial to create a "Master Resume" so that when you begin to tailor your resume to a job, you have a reference to look back on.

Also, make sure to have all of the information you will need to build your resume.  Such as your contact information, employment history (months & dates) and a list of your skills and abilities. It is a good idea if you are applying for a specific type of job that you've looked up the company's information and the skills required for that type of employment.

Prepare the material you will need to create your resume including:

  • Your contact information (name, address, phone number, professional email)

  • Your work history (including start and end dates for each position. Start with newest to oldest job.)

  • Your educational background such as degrees, diplomas, certifications or licenses

  • Any other relevant information you would like the employer to know including skills, accomplishments, awards, publications, military experience, languages, etc.

Create a resume:

  • Use a blank document on MS Word to design and personalize your resume.

  • Or us a MS Word template.  Templates are preformatted documents created to look professional and meet industry standards.

COVER LETTER

Getting started. . . The purpose of a cover letter is to introduce yourself to an organization, demonstrate your interest in the company or a specific position within the company, draw attention to your resume as well as skills and experience, and motivate the hiring manager to interview you. Very often this letter is the 1st contact you will have with the employer. Make it a good impression.

Make it your own! Change up the wording and make your cover letter unique and personable. You want to stand out from the rest. Do not just restate your resume. Add your information in the desired areas and include anything else you would like the employer to know.
